About Yusuf Y. Aliyu
Mr. Aliyu is a microbiologist with hands-on experience working with albino rat models in biomedical research. Prior to joining the CTIDR his experience included animal handling, animal tissues/organs collection, bacterial isolation and culture, microscopy and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Yusuf joined the services of CTIDR as a Research Assistant, where he oversees the insectary, earning an apt nickname, “mosquito man.” He has become a go to person when it comes to field surveillance, including adult mosquito indoor and outdoor collections, larval survey, setting of ovitrap for Aedes mosquitoes, morphological identification of Anopheles, Aedes and Culex species, as well as the various protocols for insecticide susceptibility testing.
Yusuf has been instrumental to setting up temperature testing platform in CTIDR lab, and he has spent the whole of 2025 investigating the impact of static and dynamic temperatures on Anopheles mosquitoes. This he has conducted using static and ramping experiments with Anopheles mosquitoes from seventeen sites spanning the 5 eco-climatic zones in Nigeria. He also has a hands-on experience on molecular laboratory techniques including DNA extraction, conventional PCR, molecular genotyping and biochemical assays.
