About Muhammad M. Mukhtar
Mr. Muhammad M. Mukhtar is a research-driven biochemist and an academic (assistant lecturer) at Bayero University Kano, with over 9 years of combined research and teaching experience spanning molecular biology, biotechnology, and vector biology. He holds a Bachelor degree in Biochemistry and Master degree in Biotechnology and from Bayero University Kano.
His research experience include diseases vectors biology and bionomics, insecticide resistance surveillance, supporting evidence-based malaria control policy. He also has contributed to the research on pathogens, including Plasmodium, as well as resistance in agricultural pests, including tomato leaf miner (Tuta absoluta) and red fluor beetle (Tribolium castaneum).
He is proficient in molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, cDNA synthesis, gel electrophoresis, ELISA, single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping, etc. His field expertise encompasses WHO-standard insecticide susceptibility bioassays, mosquito colony maintenance, breeding habitat physicochemical assessment, and resistance genes characterization.
Mr. Mukhtar has authored 26 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals, including the Scientific Reports, BMC Biology, PLoS ONE, Malaria Journal, Insects, GigaByte, etc.
He has supervised and mentored numerous BSc and MSc students not only from Bayero University Kano but also from collaborating institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, building research capacity among the next generation of biomedical scientists in Nigeria.
Currently, Mr. Mukhtar serves as research assistant in a Wellcome Trust Career Development Award grant to Prof. Sulaiman S. Ibrahim, where he has been researching the impact of temperature and humidity and by extension climate change on the fitness of malaria mosquitoes. He is also the designated secretary for the CTIDR.
