About Abdullahi Sulaiman
I am Abdullahi Sulaiman, an Assistant Chief Scientific Officer with Scientific Equipment Development Institute, Minna under the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Nigeria. I obtained my first degree (B.Sc Biochemistry) from Bayero University, Kano and second degree (M.Sc Biochemistry) from Jodhpur National University, India. I am currently undertaking a PhD in Biochemistry in the Department of Biochemistry, Bayero University Kano, Nigeria under the supervision of Prof. Binta Kurif (primary) and Professor Sulaiman S. Ibrahim (secondary).
My Ph.D research focuses on deciphering the impact of temperature on the efficacy of public health insecticide-based malaria vector control tools. I am investigating how temperature affects the insecticide resistance in the major malaria vectors, Anopheles coluzzii and Anopheles funestus s.s. This is important as different insecticide chemistries exhibit contrasting efficacies depending on the ambient temperatures, with some becoming more toxic with increasing temperatures (positive temperature coefficient) and some less toxic (negative temperature coefficient). Little is known about this in field mosquitoes, though it is an important phenomenon which will increasingly affect the efficacy of insecticides in the fast changing climate conditions we are experiencing.
